WIXQ RealAudio / Windows Media Streaming Broadcast Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I can't hear anything!

Make sure your speakers are plugged in, turned on, and turned up.   Try to listen to other sound files on your computer.  If sound eludes you, you have a technical problem on your end.

I am using RealPlayer and I get a message that says, 'The file isn't available or the server is having trouble'.

This probably means that you're using version 5 or earlier of RealPlayer.   To listen to WIXQ over the Internet, you NEED:

RealPlayer 7+ (or RealPlayer G2)
RealPlayer 7

AND

Internet Explorer 4+
MS Internet Explorer
      (or)
Netscape 4+
Netscape

All of these programs are totally free for your downloading pleasure, and they're quite easy to install.

The sound is choppy and I keep getting disconnected and/or I get lots of "Net Congestion" messages.

In short, this means that the Internet connection between your computer and our RealAudio/Windows Media servers is too slow. The RealAudio broadcast originates from our studios on the campus of Millersville University. MU has a relatively old, slow, and heavily trafficked connection to the Internet, so when lots of people are listening, it's possible that there's just not enough Internet bandwidth to go around, especially during peak hours (5pm-10pm EST).

There are two things you can do to help. First, in RealPlayer, go to Options | Preferences | Connection. For Normal Bandwidth, select "28.8". For Maximum Bandwidth, select "33.6". Second, try to minimize your bandwidth usage while you're listening. In other words, don't visit graphics-intensive websites or download files while tuned in. If you frequently have trouble, let us know by E-mailing computer.administrator@wixq.com. Tell us the precise time, date, and nature of the problem (including the exact error message), and explain how you are connected to the Internet (i.e. AOL with a modem).

My player looks like it's playing, but there's no sound, and I've checked the above problems.

WIXQ might not be broadcasting.  We're down for maintenance on Monday mornings from 7am-10am, and sometimes we sleep during the wee hours of the morning.  Since WIXQ is a part of Millersville University, we're also subject to semester breaks and holidays.  Check the Program Grid to find out what, if anything, is currently supposed to be playing.  (Note that this is college radio, so the emphasis in the former sentence is on "supposed to be.")

It's playing, but music doesn't match the format listed in the "Now Playing" section.

The ASP coding for the "Now Playing" functions read the time directly off the server at Beacon Technologies, located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, USA.  In other words, your location in the world does not factor into the equation and the displayed show (or "Off Air" message) should be correct.

If it's not, there's a good chance two shows have switched time slots for the week.  Please keep in mind that WIXQ is college radio at its finest, and nothing is really set in stone.  Feel free to contact the DJ in the studio if you like what they're playing and ask them who they are.

I'm trying to record a show with RealPlayer, but the record feature is grayed-out. Is there a problem?

No.  We have intentionally disabled digital recording of our broadcast to discourage unauthorized signal redistribution.  If you want to preserve us for posterity, use a cassette recorder.  We're sorry a few bad eggs had to spoil it for the bunch.

Is this really a station out of Millersville?  How come you're on my computer?  I don't live anywhere near Millersville.

Yes, this is the real WIXQ, FCC certified and proud of it.  We're on the computer because our miserly budgeting permitted us the purchase of live Internet streaming server equipment and software.  To read more specific technical information on our equipment/software, please check out our techie-fact sheet.

I don't have a clue.  Please help me!
